Freshman Tamara Kesser scores her first career goal in FAU's 2-0 victory

Making the most out of its scoring opportunities the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team scored twice in the second half en route to shutting out Cal Poly 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

The Owls improve to 2-4-1 on the season and run the unbeaten match streak at home to three. Cal Poly drops to 2-4 on the season.

Freshman Tamara Kesser scored her first career goal to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage early in the second half on a cross from Gabriele Devries into the center of the box. Kesser would finish into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season.

"We definitely needed that type of win against a really good team and Cal Poly is one of those teams," said Head Coach Brian Dooley. "We just had to find a way to get a win and today we did."

Later in the half Janelle Blake capped the contests' scoring in the 77th minute from a cross left of the box by Laura Hyvonen.

Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Lantes recorded the shutout recording 10 saves in the match. Cal Poly had 23 shots compared to eight for FAU.

Dooley is appreciative of having two SEC teams coming to south Florida. "That has always been our philosophy," said Dooley. "I would rather play those games and struggle than games that will not challenge us."

FAU will continue the four-match home stand next weekend against Southeastern Conference Arkansas on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. and Mississippi on Sunday, Sept. 20 at noon.
